MINISTER TO INAUGURATE SMALLHOLDER ESTATE FOREST IN SAROLANGUN
Jambi, Nov 16 (ANTARA) - Forestry Minister MS Kaban is scheduled to inaugurate the allocation of 26,000 ha of land for a smallholder forest (HTR) in Sarolangun district, Jambi, on December 4, this year.
The inauguration will coincide with the launching of self-integrated city by the Manpower and Transmigration Minister on December 21, 2008, but the two ministers could not meet the schedule, Sarolangun district head Hasan Basri Agus said here on Sunday.
"It is for that reason that we set a new date, namely December 4, 2008 for the forest inauguration. In the next few days, I plan to fly to Jakarta to meet with forestry minister and manpower and transmigration minister to discuss this matter," he said.
The allocation of the smallholder land was actually a part of Jambi administration program to preserve the forest and improve the economy of the people living in the vicinity of the forest.
According to him, Jambi had proposed to the forestry ministry for an HTR development on 80,000 ha of land, covering the districts of Sarolangun, Tebo, Batanghari, Muarojambi, West Tanjung Jabung and East Tanjung Jabung.
Initiated by the Jambi farmers association, HTR will likely develop green Jelutung trees, namely a local prime and rare commodity.
Jelutung plants are planned to be cultivated in HTR. They have a good export prospect as its latex is greatly demanded in the US, European, Japanese, Hongkong and Chinese markets.
The development of HTR on less productive land has been principally approved by MS Kaban on a 44,000 ha land, while the rest (44,000 ha) is contributed by PT. Wira Karya Sakti (WKS) which is now running an industrial estate forest (HTI) in six districts.
