DRAGON BOAT COMPETITION IN MUSI RIVER NOV 27
Palembang, Nov 15 (ANTARA) - The Palembang city administration is to organize a dragon boat competition on November 27 in the Musi river as part of a Visit Musi 2008 program, a local official said.
Dragon boat teams from Central Java, East Kalimantan and Penang (Malaysia) had already registered their plan to take part in the competition, Apriadi S Busri, assistant for developmental and economic affairs to the Palembang mayor, said here Saturday.
Each team would consist of 20 people including a drummer, the team leader and rowers. They would move their boats at maximum speed to be the first to reach the finish line.
The competition would be one of the Visit Musi 2008 attractions expected to draw many domestic and foreign visitors, he said.
Busri said tens of invitations for the competition had been distributed during the recent Asian Beach Games in Bali and the organizing committee was now waiting for confirmations from more neighboring countries.
He expected the event to become an annual tourism agenda in Palembang to draw more tourists.
Since the launch of the Visit Musi program last January 5, 2008, some one million local and foreign tourists had come to Palembang, according to Basri.
Besides a dragon boat competition, the program's organizers would also hold a bidar (traditional rowing boat) race and a decorated boats parade, he said.
