FOURTEEN PEOPLE ARRESTED OVER PLTU TELUKNAGA ARSON
Tangerang, Banten, Nov 15 (ANTARA) - Police have arrested 14 people suspected of torching a mess hall and vehicles of the workers of the building contractor of the third unit of thermal power plant PLTU Teluknaga in Tangerang district, Banten.
"One of the suspects is the mastermind of the arson attack," Chief of the Tangerang District Police Adjunct Chief Commissioner Agus Andrianto said on Saturday.
Seven of the suspects were arrested on Friday and the rest on Saturday, he said.
One of the suspects was the Lontar village head, identified by his initials as Hae. He was strongly believed to be the mastermind of Friday's arson attack, Agus said.
Before the arson attack, Hae had often mobilized local residents to stage rallies to protest against the construction of the third unit of PLTU Teluknaga, Agus said.
He said the arson attack was incited by a series of police raids on thugs who often collected illegal fees from drivers of the project's vehicles passing through the village.
"Police arrested seven people in the raids on the thugs," he said.
Following the arrest, a crowd of people cordoned off the location of the project urging police to release the seven detained residents. The mob later set fire to the mess hall and vehicles of the building contractor, including heavy-duty equipment.
