MEDAN NGOs, STUDENTS HOLD ORANGUTAN CARING WEEK
Medan, Nov 15 (ANTARA) - A number of non-governmental and student organizations here Saturday launched the 4th Orangutan Caring Week (OCW) which will last until November 20.
Sofian Hadinata Bangun, coordinator of the 4th OCW, told Antara the purpose of the event was to increase the public's awareness about Orangutan Sumatra conservation.
Sumatra forests were being destroyed at a rate of up to nearly 0.6 million hectares per year while hunting of the protected species was the main cause of their dwindling population, he said.
"Concern for orangutans can not be separated from concern for the maintenance of their habitat, and saving the forests which are their home means saving our own lives on earth," he explained.
This year's OCW was themed "Protecting orangutans and their habitat for the sustainability of human life" and would consist of a number of activities at several locations in Medan , namely environmental caring actions (Nov 17), orangutan discussion series with environmental activists and students at North Sumatra University (Nov 19) and State University of Medan (Nov 23), distributing to and sticking OCW stickers on in public transports at university campuses (Nov 20).
Some of the organizations involved in the event are the Orangutan Information Center (OIC), Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP), Leuser International Foundation (LIF), Orang Utan Republic Education Initiative (OUREI), and student organizations.
