YUDHOYONO, TARO AGREE ASIAN REGION MUST HELP OVERCOME GLOBAL CRISIS
Washington DC, Nov. 14 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso have underscored the need for the world to involve the Asian region in dealing with the current global financial crisis because it was playing an important role in world economic growth.
Presidential spokesman Dino Patti Djalal made the statement following a bilateral meeting between Yudhoyono and Aso here on Friday, prior to the Group of 20 (G-20) Summit to be held on Saturday.
In the meeting, Yudhoyono and Aso discussed about coordination efforts during the G-20 Summit.
Prime Minister Aso asked Indonesia to support the involvement of Asian countries such as Japan in dealing with the global financial crisis.
Japan has played important role globally and regionally in stabilizing the money market and boosting the world economic growth.
"In such a unstable global economic condition, Japan is still able to increase its trade and investment in ASEAN," Djalal said.
The two leaders also agreed to speed up the realization of Chiang Mai Initiative crucial for the interests of ASEAN+3 (China, Japan and South Korea) in coping with the impacts of the financial crisis.
The Chiang Mai Initiative (CMI) is an initiative under the ASEAN+3 framework which aims for creation of a network of Bilateral Swap Arrangements (BSAs) among ASEAN+3 countries.
US President George Bush was scheduled to host a banquet for leaders of the G-20 member countries at the White House on Friday evening.
On Saturday (Nov. 15), the President will attend the G-20 Summit to be held at the National Building Museum and formally titled "Summit on Financial Markets and the World Economy".
Yudhoyono will address the Summit after speeches by President George W Bush, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and Chinese Prime Minister Wen Jibao.
The G-20 is comprised of Argentina, Australia, Brazil,
Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan,
Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, the European Union, Turkey, Britain and the United States.
After the summit, Yudhoyono will hold a meeting with Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd.
