RI DEPOSITS ASEAN CHARTER RATIFICATION INSTRUMENTS

Jakarta, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has become the 9th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) member state that deposited ratification instruments on the ASEAN Charter, according to a press release from the ASEAN Secretariat here Friday.

Haris Nugroho, the Indonesian foreign mnistry's acting director for political, security and territorial treaties, handed over the ratification instruments to ASEAN Deputy Secretary-General Nicholas T. Dammen representing ASEAN Secretary General Surin Pitsuwan on Thursday (Nov 13).

"I would like to thank Indonesia for their support of the ASEAN Charter process. Counting Indonesia, nine ASEAN member states have now deposited their instruments of ratification. We are right on track to have the entry into force of the ASEAN Charter by the 14th ASEAN Summit," Surin Pitsuwan said.

With the depositing of Indonesia's instruments of ratification, Thailand is the remaining ASEAN member state that has yet to do the same.

The ASEAN Charter would enter into force 30 days after the depositing of the last instruments of ratification with the ASEAN Secretary-General.

The Indonesian House of Representatives at a plenary session on October 21, 2008, approved the government's proposal to ratify the ASEAN Charter.

At that session, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirajuda said the ASEAN Charter would open greater opportunities to all ASEAN member countries to implement ASEAN values.

"With the agreement to form an ASEAN community in 2015 on the basis of three pillars --political, economic and socio-cultural communities, ASEAN member countries really realize that ASEAN needs to transform itself into an organization with clear procedures," the minister said.

The ASEAN Charter was signed by the ASEAN heads of government at the 13rd ASEAN Summit on November 23, 2007.
