VP DENIES GOVT INTERVENED IN E JAVA GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION
Jakarta, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - Vice President M. Jusuf Kalla has denied an allegation that the central government had intervened in the recent gubernatorial election in East Java.
"There was no government intervention in the election. What would we have done it for," Kalla told the press after Friday prayers here on Friday.
He made the remark in response to an allegation that the central government had intervened in the second round of the East Java's gubernatorial election to enable one of the tickets to win.
Earlier, the Khofifah-Mujiono pair had accused the government of having intervened in the election by sending one of its cabinet ministers to East Java several days prior to the poll.
"The minister's visit to Eat Java should not be seen as intervention in the regional election," Kalla said.
He said, if a minister had indeed asked for permission (from the president) to campaign in support of a certain candidate in a regional head election, that was something quite permissible and legitimate.
Therefore, the presence of a minister in a certain region prior to a local election was something normal, he said.
