VP: RI BEGINNING TO FEEL GLOBAL CRISIS` IMPACT

Jakarta, Nov. 14 (ANTARA) - Vice President M Jusuf Kalla said Indonesia was now beginning to feel the impact of the current global economic crisis.

"The impact (of the global crisis) has come to Indonesia, and we are beginning to feel it," Vice President M Jusuf Kalla said at his office here on Friday when receiving a delegation of the Indonesian Islamic School teachers' Association (PGMI).

Because of the crisis which started in the United States, the European community's purchasing power had dropped, he said.

Consequently, the European people had reduced their shopping and travel activities, and this had caused a drop in fuel usage. This had affected and lowered the prices of palm oil and rubber in Indonesia.

However, the vice president called on the Indonesian people to remain calm and not to panic for the sake of economic stability in dealing with the global crisis.

"The nation must remain calm. Teachers should not ask students to stage rallies for small matters," Kalla said.

Meanwhile, earlier PGMI Chairman Syamsudin reported that the PGMI congress was being participated in by around 300 teachers of Islamic schools throughout Indonesia. The two-day meeting (Nov. 14 and 15) is aimed at introducing and consolidating PGMI's programs.
