SAUDI ARABIA INVITED TO INVEST IN W SUMATRA`S OIL, GAS SECTOR

Padang, Indonesia, Nov 14 (ANTARA) - The West Sumatra provincial administration has offered an opportunity to invest in the region's oil and gas sector to Saudi Arabia, Governor Gunawan Fauzi said.
West Sumatra would welcome Saudi Arabian investment in its oil and gas sector although part of its oil and gas-rich region along the Southeast Bukit Barisan mountain range, known as the Singkarak block, had already been tendered out to a certain company, the governor said here Friday.

"Although the winner of the tender on part of the Singkarak block has already been announced (in Jakarta), we have offered an opportunity to Saudi Arabia to finance oil and gas explorations in West Sumatra because developing all of our oil and gas potentials will require huge amounts of capital," Fauzi told reporters after receiving Saudi Arabia's ambbassador to Indonesia, Abdulrahman MA Al Hayat.

Hopefully, Saudi Arabia was interested in the offer so that West Sumatra's oil and gas potentials could be developed on a bigger scale, the governor said.

According to seismic studies done so far, the Singkarak block held oil reserves totaling 725,000 barrels and gas reserves totaling 43 million cubic feet.

In 1983, Caltex had started drilling 9,902-feet-deep wells in the Singkarak block but eventually discontinued the activity for unclear reasons.

Fauzi said in his meeting with the Saudi ambbassdor, he had also offered opportunities to Saudi Arabia to invest in agriculture and annimal husbandry in West Sumatra.

The Saudi diplomat who had earlier traveled through West Sumatra to observe local conditions had admitted the province was vast and rich in natural resources and fertile land for farming, the governor said.

"The land of this region is fertile and very suitable for agriculture, including production of vegetables," the governor quoted Al Kayyat as saying.

Fauzi said he had also invited Saudi Arabia to invest in animal husbandry for raising goats and sheep, especially in Padang City, Pesisir Selatan and Padang Pariaman districts.
According to Fausi, the ambassador said his office would soon take further action to follow up on the results of his talk with the West Sumatra governor.
