BI ASSURES PUBLIC BANKING INDUSTRY STILL STRONG, STABLE
Jakarta, Nov. 14 (ANTARA) - Bank Indonesia (BI), the central bank, has assured the public that the national banking industry is currently in a strong and stable condition, and that rumors to the contrary were baseless.
"I can assure the public that the Indonesian banking industry is still in a strong and stable condition and that banks are still able to provide the best possible services to the public," BI Governor Boediono said at a press conference here on Friday.
Boediono called the press conference following the failure of PT Bank Century Tbk to make interbank payments due to technical problems. Rumors around the glitch prompted Bank Century clients to withdraw their money from the bank while trading in the bank's shares at the Jakarta bourse was suspended.
"Herewith, we assure the public that the rumors are not true and baseless," Boediono said, adding that Bank Century was now taking part again in the bank clearing system and the suspension order on its shares in the Indonesian Stock Exchange had been lifted.
Meanwhile, BI Deputy Governor Budi Rochadi said Bank Century could not participate in the bank clearing system because it was late in providing pre-funds.
"The funds were supposed to have been handed in at 8 am but they were received only at 8.15. So, it was just a technical problem," he said.
