Psycho counselling for war-affected Tamil civilians
Colombo, Nov 14 (PTI) As thousands of petrified Tamil
civilians get displaced in the intensified war between Sri Lankan forces and Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.) in the island nation's embattled north, the government has swung into action providing essential items and setting up Psycho centres to treat the inhabitants.
The Psycho-Social Promotion Forum has taken in its fold children, women, the senior citizens and others to assure them of rehabilitation measures and medical care.
The Forum, a newly inaugurated structure comprises of representatives from health, education, District Secretariats and religious dignitaries, recently organised an 18 day training programme on psycho-social issues for 40 staff members of those institutions.
The training began on November one near the rebel stronghold of Mullaitivu and is being conducted by local N.G.O. Annai Illam, reports said, adding newly trained staff will be deployed amongst the Internally Displaced Persons sites to assist those psychologically affected by the conflict.
The Regional Director of Health Services (R.D.H.S.) Mullaitivu reported that he was awaiting arrival of two lorry full of medicines to be transported from Vavuniya in the coming days even as the approval of medical consignments for the fourth quarter drugs is still pending.
Two malaria cases were found in the district last week as health volunteers and R.D.H.S. staff implement an Anti-Malaria campaign in the war ravaged district.
Shelter and Wash continues to be on priority for
I.D.P.s in the Wanni that comprises of Kilinochchi and
Mullaittivu, aid workers said, adding thousands of I.D.P.s are
without adequate shelter and open defecation is widespread due
to the lack of toilet facilities.
The worst hit is Kilinochchi, where the Sri Lankan
troops have reportedly captured several areas in the L.T.T.E.
stronghold leaving hundreds of civilians displaced.
According to the Government Agent (G.A.) in
Kilinochchi, the total number of I.D.P.s in the district
continues to increase following ongoing confrontations in
Poonakary division as well as aerial bombardments recently
reported in Paranthan.
The R.D.H.S. of Kilinochchi has expressed concern at
the likelihood of outbreaks of water borne disease unless
conditions are improved particularly now with the resumption
of seasonal monsoon rains, a U.N. report said.
Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Minister of Resettlement and
Disaster Relief Services Abdul Risath Bathiyutheen said all
efforts are to provide relief measures for the I.D.P.s.
The Government has a fully functioning mechanism to
provide all the basic needs for the Internally Displaced
People (I.D.P.) in non liberated areas and for the civilians
arriving in Vavuniya using the safe corridor established by
the Government, the minister told reporters recently.
He said while the World Food Organization is providing
assistance in this direction, the administration was catering
to the needs of civilians seeking protection.
Accordingly, IDPs in Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu
Districts are been provided dry rations, health and sanitary
facilities, water, and electricity.
Minister Bathiyutheen said that 1300 I.D.P.s living in
temporary shelters in Musali in Mannar will be resettled once
the de-mining process is completed. PTI
