Gas blast victim`s kin wins fight for visa extension in Canada

Toronto, Nov 14 (PTI) The brother of an Indian immigrant, who was killed in a gas explosion here in August, will be granted an extension of his visitor's visa to enable him to wrap up outstanding legal and insurance matters related to the accident.

"Vikramjit Singh Saini will be granted a multiple-entry temporary resident permit for one year," Alykhan Velshi, spokesperson for Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Friday.

"With this, he will be able to remain in Canada to handle any outstanding legal and insurance matters surrounding his brother's death," he said.

Parminder Singh Saini (25), student at Brampton's Sheridan College, had been working at Sunrise Propane plant here where he was killed in an early-morning blast on August 10.

Vikramjit Singh Saini, who arrived in Canada for his brother's funeral, said his family lawyer advised he would need a year to deal with the legal and insurance arrangements against Sunrise, but he had been unsuccessful in getting the immigration to extend his single-entry, two-month visitor's visa.

Saini, 33, was thrilled with the news, saying he could
now travel between Canada and India to deal with the
compensation issues as well as fly home to take care of his
parents.

"I am very happy and relieved, This will make things much
easier for me and my family." Saini, who is on leave from
work at an army school said. PTI
