MASELA GAS BLOCK TO BE DEVELOPED USING UPSTREAM SYSTEM : BP MIGAS
Jakarta, Nov 13 (ANTARA) - The Upstream Oil and Gas Regulating Body (BP Migas) said the Masela gas block in the Timor Sea would be operated through an upstream development system.
BP Migas chief R Priyono said here on Thursday his office would submit a plan of development (POD) containing a recommendation for the use of the upstream system to the Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Ministry on Saturday (November 15, 2008).
"Let's hope the proposal will be approved and signed soon," the BP Migas head said.
He said the decision to use the upstream system was based on the consideration that the downstream system was complicated and had the potential to create problems.
"We can see an example in the development of the Senoro block where the downstream development system was used," Priyono said, adding that development of the Senoro field was now still mired in a legal problem.
With the upstream development system, the contractor of the Masela field, Inpex Masela Ltd, will be able to develop gas and build a refinery at the same time, he said.
The upstream development system was also being used in developing the Tangguh, Bontang and Arun oil and gas fields.
In the meantime, the Indonesian government on Thursday signed 33 contracts to cooperate in developing oil and gas as well as coal bed methane (CBM) worth US$912.1 million or more than Rp10 trillion.
Priyono on behalf of the government signed the contracts with 33 companies or consortium that had won the tenders.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro also signed the contracts as a witness.
The deals comprise 29 contracts of gas and oil blocks worth US$891.8 million, and four contracts of CBM worth US$20.3 million.
Twenty of the 29 oil and gas contracts, worth a total of US57.3 million, were awarded through direct offers and nine , worth a total of US$534.9 million, through regular tenders.
