RUPIAH DEPRECIATES, JAKARTA INDEX DOWN 5.04 PERCENT

Jakarta, Nov 13 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian rupiah depreciated to almost Rp12,000 against the US dollar on Thursday while the Jakarta Stock Exchange index closed at a level that was down 5.04 percent.
The IHSG dropped 66.908 points to 1,259.713 while the LQ45 index was corrected 15.660 points or 6.03 percent to 244.085.
"Worries over the rupiah's depreciation to almost Rp12,000 (Rp11,800) against the US dollar have made the share market depressed," research analyst of PT Sinarmas Sekuritas, Alfiansyah, said to ANTARA.
He said the rupiah had been pressured because of a global liquidity problem following foreign investors' withdrawal from developing countries.
The other factor causing the Jakarta index to drop was the weakening of regional bourses especially the Singapore and Hong Kong stock exchanges.
Hong Kong's Hang Seng index plummeted 5.97 percent or 831.79 points to 13,107.29 while Singapore's Strait Times index dropped 28.54 points or 1.60 percent to 1,755.47.
Domestic factors contributing to the situation were among others news about a bank's failure in clearing, the repo case of Bakrie Group particularly continuing decline of Bumi Resources share price and market players' prediction of a slowdown in issuers' performance this year, he said.
These are the conditions that have made the price of most shares down (155), he said adding that only 18 stocks gained while 36 others stagnant and 251 untraded.
Stocks that suffered a loss were Telkom which was corrected Rp300 to Rp5,700, Perusahaan Gas Negara down Rp170 to Rp1,710, Bank BRI dropped Rp375 to Rp3,425, United Tractors slumped Rp225 to Rp3,725, Astra International declined by Rp700 to Rp9,400 and Tambang Batubara Bukit Asam which was down Rp500 to Rp5,850.
A total of 3.582 billion shares were traded that day worth Rp1.272 trillion through 50,727 transactions.
