FERTILIZER SCARCITY IN PAMEKASAN, INDONESIA, DUE TO DISTRIBUTORS' TRICKS

Pamekasa, Indonesia, Nov 13 (ANTARA) - Pamekasan district on Madura Island, East Java, is currently facing a subsidized fertilizer scarcity due to distributors' tricks, a local councilor said.

Pamekasan Legislative Assembly (DPRD) deputy chairman Muchdar Abdullah said here Thursday his statement was based on the results of an observation of the fertilizer supply situation in several parts of the region by a DPRD team recently.

"Wednesday's arrest of a fertilizer distributor from Pamekasan, identified by his initials as MYS, indicates that fertilizer scarcity in the district is due to tricks played by distributors," Abdullah said.

Police on Wednesday arrested MYS in Sampang, Madura, and seized from him 9 tons of subsidized fertilizers ready to be sold in Malang, East Java.

Abdullah said NYS's case was the third police had uncovered in Pamekasan district in the past few months.

Therefore, he expressed hope that the government would put subsidized fertilizer distribution across the country under tight supervision.

Meanwhile, a fertilizer retailer from Proppo sub district in Pamekasan, Fathorrahman, said recently that several types of fertilizer had disappeared from the markets ahead of the planting season.

"We ordered fertilizer from agents two weeks ago but to date we have not received any," Fathorrahman said, adding that fertilizer shortages had also happened in Proppo, Larangan, Kadur, Galis, Pademawu, and Palengaan sub districts.

He said the fertilizer scarcity had caused anxiety among local farmers because the planting season was near.

Because they no longer had fertilizer in stock farmers in Kadur subdistrict would have to postpone planting paddy and corn.

"If I plant paddy and corn now without fertilizer, I'm afraid the crops will fail," said Sadik, a farmer from Kadur sub district, Pamekasan.
Meanwhile, Pameskasan district trade and industry office chief Atok Suharyanto said the fertilizer scarcity there was due to speculators' tricks because the fertilizer allocation for Pamekasan had not been reduced.

"To my knowledge, fertilizer scarcity occurs in all sub-districts and therefore we have to find out the reason behind it," Atok said, adding that such a condition frequently happened ahead of the planting season.
