Michigan State University inaugurates its Dubai center
Dubai, Nov 13, 2008 (WAM) - With more than 200 dignitaries, VIPs and guests in attendance, Michigan State University (MSU) today (November 11th) celebrated its commitment to a strong educational presence in the Middle East by inaugurating its center in Dubai International Academic City (DIAC), a member of TECOM Investments. The event marks the first US university center to be established in Dubai.
Inauguration ceremonies were held at the MSU center at DIAC. Attendees included H.E. Mohammed Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs, MSU President Lou Anna K. Simon, several members of the MSU Board of Trustees, and senior representatives of the Government of Dubai.
"Teaching and research throughout the world are important educational components for building our collective futures in an increasingly interconnected and interdependent world," said Simon who, along with the senior Dubai Government and MSU representatives, cut a ribbon officially opening the center. "Michigan State's presence in Dubai is a reflection of our world-grant commitment to extend MSU's knowledge and innovation around the globe and specifically to a region of vital interest to us all." Al Gergawi, also Executive Chairman of Dubai Holding, speaking at the inauguration, said: "The establishment of Michigan State University in Dubai represents an important step forward in Dubai's offering itself and the region the finest in educational opportunities.
Those of us who have had the chance to study in the States, know well the richness and excellence of American higher education - we are thrilled to welcome MSU to Dubai to support us in our ambitious journey." MSU's programs and presence in Dubai reflect the university's values of quality, inclusiveness and community involvement, said MSU Dubai executive director Brendan Mullan.
"MSU brings its status as a top research university, its commitment to civic engagement and its tradition of global connectivity to this program," Mullan said.
In September 2007, MSU announced its partnership with Dubai International Academic City to set up the initiative, becoming the first major North American research university with a presence in DIAC. MSU classes began in August 2008.
Dr Ayoub Kazim, Executive Director, Dubai International Academic City and Dubai Knowledge Village, said: "We are delighted to be part of the inaugural ceremony of Michigan State University. The presence of a top ranked US public Tier I research university like MSU in DIAC is welcomed by the members of the academic community, particularly by students who aspire to earn their bachelor's and postgraduate degrees from a leading educational institution." MSU offers bachelor's and master's degree programs selected because they add value to Dubai and the wider region while preserving core MSU admission, degree and quality standards, said John Hudzik, MSU vice president of global engagement and strategic projects.
"With its presence in Dubai International Academic City, Michigan State University broadens its role in a region of the world of vital interest to us all, and it complements the university's programs already in the wider region," Hudzik said. "We believe that this new effort in Dubai enhances all of our efforts throughout the Middle East and beyond." Examples of degree options at MSU in Dubai include media, communications, public relations, computer engineering, construction management, family studies and business-related programs. The MSU faculty and administrators have consulted extensively with Dubai's corporate and government leaders to identify relevant academic offerings, Hudzik said.
MSU has full academic authority and quality control over courses and programs, and MSU's regular course, program, degree, admissions and accreditation requirements are maintained. Diplomas are standard MSU diplomas.
