FTZ IN BBK TO REDUCE IMPACT OF FINANCIAL CRISIS

Tanjungpinang, Indonesia, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - A decision to develop Batam, Bintan and Karimun (BBK)into a free trade zone (FTZ) and free port could reduce the negative impacts on Riau Islands by the global financial crisis, an official said here Wednesday.

"We are convinced that if FTZ is applied, the economic risks in Riau Islands will be reduced," Secretary of the FTZ management, Jon Arizal who is also head of Riau Islands Industry and Trade Office, said.
Arizal said BBK would give a face to Riau Islands in drawing investors by simplifying the procedures in obtaining licenses, tax payments in addition to attractive tourist destinations.
However, FTZ still has not been implemented since government regulation No 63/2003 on value added tax and sales tax on luxuries in bonded areas, Batam, has not been revoked.
"We have urged the government to revoke it immediately for the implementation of FTZ," he said.
Arizal also mentioned that cargo handling in FTZ is still discussed by the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
"All regulations should support one another that it will not make the investors become worried. We have to provide them protection and comfort," he said.
