DPD URGES GOVT TO PROTECT DOMESTIC MARKET

Jakarta, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - The Regional Representatives Council (DPD) urges the government to protect the domestic market as an anticipatory step to survive the ongoing global crisis, a spokesman said.

DPD members are concerned the global crisis will have "domino effect" on Indonesia despite the country's improved macro-economic indicators.
"However good the macro economy , what is happening now is just the beginning. We are concerned about the further impact of the crisis," said Anthony Charles Sunarjo, chairman of the DPD's Ad Hoc Committee IV, here Wednesday.
He said the DPD would issue an official statement about the ongoing crisis in a plenary session to be held on November 13, 2008.
Sunarjo said while US was said to need two years to get out of the global crisis and its impact, Indonesia might need a longer time to do so.
"We may need three, four, or five years," he said.
Therefore, he said, the impact must be anticipated soon by strengthening and protecting the domestic market, the real sector, and the people's purchasing power.
The last two factors , he said, were predicted to slow down due to the decrease in export and investment activities.
Furthemore, Anthony said the DPD had asked Bank Indonesia (the central bank) to lower its interest rate in order to move the real sector. If Bank Indonesia gave a full guarantee for monetary stability , people's trust in bank savings would inncrease, he added.
Meanwhile, vice chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), Ketut Suardana, said the real sector would only move if the government gave the economy a stimulus. The stimulus, he said, was important to avoid worker layoffs and the bancruptcy of middle and small scale companies.
Indonesia, he explained, had yet to be absolutely free from the global crisis. This could be seen from the low growth of the real sector, namely trade, mining, and agriculture.
"If the government gives a stimulus, it will also result in a strengthening of the rupiah against the US dollar," he said.
