PRESIDENT HOPES DEVELOPMENT NOT TO CAUSE SHORTAGE OF FARM LAND

Sukabumi, Indonesia, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said he hoped economic development activities in the country would not cause a critical shortage of land for agriculture.

"There should always be enough paddy fields, cultivation land, and plantations," he said in remarks before taking part in a hybrid rice grand harvest at Jeruk Nyelap hamlet, Situmekar village, Lembursitu sub district, Sukabumi district, West Java, on Wednesday.
To guarantee that enough land for agriculture was available, the head of state asked regional administrations not to easily issue permits for the conversion of farmland into land for other purposes.
The president said the world's food reserves were not yet sufficient for all mankind so the nation should try to meet its own food needs. Therefore, it was important for the country to meet the target of producing 60 million tons of rice in 2008.
The head of state also reminded politicians aspiring to become national leaders not to make empty promises during their electoral campaigns.
"Explain the situation as it is, the policies, and programs clearly and let the people evaluate them. The people are smart enough to do so," he said.
The president was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Cabinet Secretary Sudi Silalahi, State Enterprise Minister Sofyan Djalil and a number of national bankers.
The hybrid rice harvested was called Bernas Prima and had been developed by Sumber Alam Sutera Ltd. It was cultivated by a local farmers group.
