BUSINESSMEN ASK FOR ECONOMIC STIMULUS
Jakarta, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesian businessmen have asked the government to give them an economic stimulus to deal with the current economic crisis until 2009.
The chairman of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), MS Hidayat, said after a meeting between businessmen and bankers and President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here on Wednesday that the impact of the current global financial crisis would be felt by the Indonesian businessmen early in 2009 and in the middle of the year when the US and European economies would be in recession.
"At the time many of our export destination countries would certainly stop their export orders and this would cause problems to businessmen," he said.
To avoid possible bankcruptcy that could lead to mass lay-offs Hidayat suggested that the government gave an economic stimulus until 2009.
One of the stimuli that the government should give was tax postponement for businesses that employ a lot of workers. "Rather than conducting lay-offs it would be better if the businessmen hold a dialogue with the government to save the economy. With the postponment businessmen could use the tax money for paying their workers," he said.
Hidayat also asked the government to give an economic stimulus to every business in every sector.
He said the idea was currently still being formulated by Kadin for immediate submission to the government.
Hidayat also repeated the call of the business community on the government to give a full blanket guarantee on all bank deposits.
He said 15 private banks had agreed to reduce their lending rate if the government would give the full guarantee.
He said Kadin also hoped that bank lending rates could be lowered to 13 percent so that businesemen would get strong support from banks.
"With the current rate of 17 percent no businessman could withstand the crisis," he said.
He said the government had promised it would consider Kadin's proposals.
President Yudhoyono would be abroad for two weeks from November 13 to 26.
Hidayat said President Yudhoyono had asked vice president Jusuf Kalla to follow up on the results of the meeting with the business community.
