RI, JAPAN LAUNCH JOINT REFORESTATION PROJECT IN BROMO NATIONAL PARK

Jakarta, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - Indonesia and Japan (Sumitomo Forestry Co.Ltd) are to cooperate in a reforestation project in the Bromo Tengger National Park, East Java, Indonesia, to be launched on Wednesday (Nov 12), the forestry ministry said in a press statement.

Under the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on the cooperation signed recently, Sumitomo would provide the project's funding while Indonesia, through its forestry ministry, would provide the needed space and funding in kind.
The project would be launched near the Bromo Tennger National Park on November 12, 2008, through a symbolic planting activity attended by a director and senior managing executive officer from Sumitomo Foretry Co.Ltd, Hideki Nose, and Forestry Minister MS Ka'ban as well as local authorities.
To the forestry ministry, the project was something in line with its policy of giving top priority to the rehabilitation and conservation of natural resources.
Moreover, the joint project was also considered as a concrete action in implementing the basic principle of the World Climate Change Convention, namely "Common but Differentiated Responsibilities."
Japan as a developed country had a prime responsibility to overcome global warming and climate change, while Indonesia as a growing country must assist developed countries in dealing with the international problems.
The project was expected to be of benefit to both countries. Japan's government would gain international acknowledgement for its contribution to efforts to overcome global warming and climate change. Meanwhile, Indonesia would see its forests returned to their function as a system to sustain life and a natural resource supporting people's welfare.
Furthermore, the international world would also mark Indonesia's contribution yo efforts to overcome global warming and climate change.
Scheduled to end in 2012, the project would reach its highest goal if it had brought about synergy among the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park's reserach and development unit, local government, entrepreneurs, and local people in the project's implementation and the maintenance of its results.
