UK to crack down on perpetrators of crime against Asian shops
London, Nov 12 (PTI) With increasing number of Asian corner shops being targeted by criminals in the country, the British Government has said that it will crack down on perpetrators of crime against businesses owned by migrant communities.
"This Government is strongly committed to put down hate crimes and harassments of small businesses in all its form," Secretary of State for Business Lord Mandelson said.
"The Government is committed that the perpetrators of crime are brought to justice," he said, while addressing AsianTrader Awards 2008 here Tuesday.
He was responding to references made by Kalpesh R Solanki, Group managing Editor, Asian Media and Marketing Group, to the continuing attacks on Asian corner shops by criminals.
Referring to the current financial crisis, the Secretary of State for Business said "We would do all we can to help small businesses to survive and grow."
"We want the U.K. to be world's Number 1 place for enterprise and business," he said.
Indian High Commissioner to U.K. Shiv Shankar Mukherjee, leading N.R.I. industrialist Lord Swraj Paul, Labour M.P. Virendra Sharma, Dr. Rami Ranger, M.B.E., N.R.I. Entrepreneur were also present on the occasion.
Mukherjee appreciated the assurances given by Mandelson to the small businesses.
Paying tributes to the Indian and Asian community for
their achievements, Mukherjee said "We are proud of your
achievements."
Referring to the forthcoming G20 Summit in Washington,
he said it was important to create a system for taking care of
the interests of small businesses, particularly in developing
countries.
He noted "40 percent of the G.D.P. in India comes from
small scale sector."
In his message, Prime Minister Gordon Brown said: "The
Asian Trader Awards Dinner plays a vital role in providing
recognition for Asian businesses in this country.
"All the nominees deserve credit for the excellence
and ingenuity shown in their field and I'd like to thank you
all for the contribution you make to your communities and the
economy as a whole.
"It is a testament to your success that many
businesses recognised here this evening are making their mark
not just in the U.K. but in today's global economy as well."
