UN SUPPORTS RI'S DISASTER MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS : MINISTER

Denpasar, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - The United Nations supports the systems applied by Indonesia to cope with natural disasters, tsunami in particular, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman said here on Wednesday.
He said besides the UN, a number of countries had also given a positive response to Indonesia's readiness to face natural disasters that may strike any time.
Speaking at a function to lay the first cornerstone of a French Red Cross-assisted building to house Bali's Disaster Management Operation Control Center (Pusdalops PB), Kadiman said a lot of countries besides the UN supported Indonesia's efforts to heighten its preparedness to face disasters.
He said the support had came from France, Germany, Britain, Japan, Australia, and the United States.
The construction of Pusdalops PB in Bali, equipped with various sophisticated instruments was part of a cooperation with other countries in promoting Indonesia's readiness to face disasters.
Kadiman said various efforts which had been made to manage and mitigate unexpected natural disasters were expected to give a sense of security and comfort to the people.
The minister said, it was important to have a disaster management system , especially in Bali as a main international tourist destination in Indonesia.
Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman, Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika, and French Red Cross mission chief Jean Arnaud Etcheanchu, took turns to lay the corner stones of the 400-sq-meter Pusdalops PB building which is to be constructed at a cost of Rp2 billion.
The funds of the earthquake-resistant building, including its equipment and training personnel for disaster management, would all come from the French government.
The building was expected to be ready for use in June 2009. Its management will be handed to the Bali provincial administration in conjunction with its 51st anniversary on August 14, 2009.
Meanwhile, Jean Arnaud said the construction of the Pusdalops PB building in Bali was part of bilateral cooperation between the Indonesian and French governments.
