RRI TO HOST ABU-GENERAL ASSEMBLY MEETING IN BALI
Jakarta, Nov 12 (ANTARA) - State-owned radio station RRI will host a general assembly and associated meetinggs of the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) in Nusa Dua, Bali, Nov 19-25, an RRI official said.
"The 45th ABU General Assembly on Nov 24-25 will be preceded by ABU techincal, sports and program commissions from November 19 to 22," RRI President Director Parni Hadi said here Wednesday.
The technical commission would discuss utilization of digital technology in the broadcasting industry. The program commission would take up issues related to broadcasting rights on international sport events, news exchange among ABU members through the Asiavision system, program and production development.
"Vice-President Jusuf Kalla is scheduled to open the ABU General Assembly in November 24 at 9 a.m local time," Hadi said.
ABU is a non-commercial organization grouping about 170 broadcasting institutions in 53 countries.
"The General Assembly will have two very important issues on its agenda, namely tourism and terrorism, and peace journalism," he said.
The discussions on tourism and terrorism would focus on the role of broadcast media in informing the public about terrorist acts, and the impact of terrorism on the tourism sector.
In the discussions on the role of broadcast media in promoting peace and democracy, delegates would also talk about how to cover a conflict and promote peace and democracy.
Indonesia's Communication and Information Minister was scheduled to be one of the key speakers at the assembly.
Meanwhile, the secretary general of the event's organizing committee, Bimo Nimpuno, said on Nov 24 a ceremony would take place for the presentation of an ABU Prize to radio stations that had produced the best programs in the fields of drama, infotainment, children and teenagers, news, and also documentaries.
There would also be an exhibition participated in by many communication and information industry organizations in Indonesia and other countries.
The director of information and media at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, Soehardjono Sastromihardjo, said the ABU-General Assembly and Associated Meetings would be a good opportunity to promote Indonesia.
"As host, RRI will be a frontliner in promoting Indonesia, and show that Indonesia is still in a very conducive situation even after the execution of the Bali Bombing I trio," Sastromihardjo said.
