AGO MAY SUMMON FORMER MINISTER MAHENDRA OVER CORRUPTION CASE

Jakarta, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - The Attorney General's Office (AGO) may summon former justice minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra as a witness in a corruption case involving a few of his former subordinates that caused the state a financial loss of Rp400 billion, a spokesman said.
"We will investigate the case further. If necessary, we will invite him (Mahendra) to come to us to be questioned as witness," Deputy for Special Crimes to the Attonrey General Marwan Effendi said here on Tuesday.
The AGO had already arrested two suspects for misuse of state funds in the purchase of an automated fingerprint identification system for the justice ministry, namely former director general of general law administration Romli Atmasasmita and the serving director general of general law administration, Syamsuddin Manan Sinaga.
Another suspect, Zulkarnain Yunus, is already on trial in the Corruption Court.
"Based on the results of investigations by our special unit, there is no problem with the ministerial decree authorizing the purchase of the equipment. The irregularities happened at the level of implementing officials," Effendi said.
Romli Atmasasmita was arrested because there was sufficient proof of his involvement in the case, he said , adding there was no hidden agenda behind the arrest.
"This is a follow up of a report from citizens," he said.
