RI, CHINA TO COOPERATE IN GUARANTEEING SAFETY OF FISHERY PRODUCTS

Beijing, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - Indonesian and Chinese government representatives here Tuesday signed an agreement to cooperate in providing guarantees on the security and safety of fishery products the two countries export to each other.
The signing was done by Martani Huseini of Indonesia's marine and fisheries ministry and Yu Tawei of China's General Administration for Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ).
"The cooperation is very important for both countries as it will prevent their fishery products from being rejected by either side on the ground that the products are unsafe or below standard," Huseini said after the signing ceremony.
The cooperation was also intended to strengthen the two countries' bilateral relations in the export and import of such fishery products as fresh fish and seaweed.
Another purpose of the cooperation was to guarantee the safety of fish for consumers in China as well as in Indonesia, he added.
"It is very important as several months ago fishery products from Indonesia were rejected by China causing a problem to Indonesian fish exporters," Huseini said.
"With this cooperation, each side is expected to supervise each other's products. Indonesia can supervise fishery products imported from China and vice versa to make sure the goods are safe for consumers," said Huseini.
Meanwhile, Yu Tawei said the cooperation proved Indonesia and China had a common will to improve their fishery products trade which has been going for a long time.
"The security and safety of fishery products is a sensitive problem for China as well as Indonesia. So, this cooperation has a very important meaning," Tawei said.
"I hope we can have this kind of cooperation not only for fishery products but also for other food products being traded between Indonesia and China," said Tawei.
Under the agreement, Indonesia and China will conduct technical exchanges of laboratory testing methods and of experience in management trough mutual visits by their fisheries officials and experts.
The two countries will also cooperate in research on ways to improve the quality of their fishery products.
Through the cooperation, Indonesian and Chinese exporters are expected to do strict testing on fishery products to be exported and obtain the relevant certificates from the related authorities.
Products intended for export also have to meet all the security and safety requirements stipulated in both countries' regulations and standards.
Whenever a problem is found in an imported fishery product, the importer has the right to temporarily stop the import and the import can be resumed after the problem has been solved through bilateral consultations.
