PRESIDENT COMMISSSIONS NATIONAL TSUNAMI EARLY WARNING SYSTEM

Jakarta, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono launched a national Tsunami Early Warning System (InaTEWS) here Tuesday at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) headoffice.
According to a BMG press statement, InaTEWS was built by the Indonesian government with the involvement of 18 state institutions, and funding and technological asssitnace from five donor countries, namely Germany, China, Japan, the US, and France.
After an earthquake and an ensuing tsunami hit Aceh on December 26, 2004, the creation of a tsunami and earthquake rearly warning system in the country became an urgent need.
InaTEWS is capable of giving a warning five minutes after the occurrence of an earhquake with the potential to trigger a tsunami. It is an early warning system based on a new technology called Decision Support System (DSS).
DSS collects all information yielded by an earthquake monitoring system, tsunami simulation, tsunami monitoring, and earth crust deformation after an earthquake takes place.
InaTEWS's existence in Indonesia could also reflect the Indonesian government's active efforts in the international world to protect peoples around the Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean from the threat of tsunami.
In October 2008, InaTEWS was operating 166 broadband seismometer units, 45 tide gauge units , and three buosy units.
At the luanching ceremony, President Yudhoyono was accompanied by Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal, Research and Technology Minister Kusmayanto Kadiman, and presidential spokesman Andi Malaranggeng.
