PRESIDENT YUDHOYONO TO VISIT N SULAWESI
Manado, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to visit North Sulawesi at the end of this year to inspect security and infrastructure preparation in the run up to the World Ocean Conference (WOC) here on May 11-15, 2009.
"A number of state leaders around the world will attend such an international event in Manado, and therefore President Yudhoyono finds it necessary to inspect infrastructure preparation and security here at the end of this year," North Sulawesi provincial administration spokesman Roy Tumiwa said here on Tuesday.
He said Yudhoyono's visit would also be in connection with the simulation of tsunami drills, and the dedication of 40 megawatt Lahendong geothermal power plant (PLTP) in Minahasa on December 26, 2008.
Tumiwa said that on December 25, President Yudhoyono would also attend Christmas party with Christian community in North Sulawesi.
According to him, WOC'09 would provide a platform where world leaders and decision makers would come together to make commitments for sustainable development of marine resources.
Given the fact that Indonesia is the largest archipelagic country and possesses the highest marine biodiversity in the world, the summit will strengthen Indonesia's participation in the regional and international forum.
Gradual degradation of marine and fisheries resources has been related to over fishing, pollution, and climate change, and therefore he said global effort to stop this trend was urgently required.
Meanwhile, UNESCO has pledged its support for the WOC to be held in Manado from May 11 to 15, 2009 as part of efforts to deal with global warming.
"Several member states of UNESCO have expressed their readiness to participate in WOC in Manado as their response to the threat of environmental and marine degradation," North Sulawesi Governor Sinyo Sarundajang said recently.
Sarundajang attended the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Forum, the 41st Session of the UNESCO Executive Council, in Paris from June 24 to July 1, 2008.
The governor said some 50 countries attending the UNESCO forum expressed their support for the Indonesian government initiative to organize WOC because marine environmental preservation is crucial for the whole world.
