BENGKULU ROCKED BY 5.3 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE

Bengkulu, Nov 11 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale rocked Bengkulu and its vicinity at 8:12 on Tuesday morning, the local meteorology and geophysics agency (BMG) said.

The agency said the epicenter of the earthquake was located at 4.24 degrees southern latitude and 101.97 degrees eastern longitude at a depth of 27 kilometers under the sea level, or 59 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu city.

The temblor was powerful enough to prompt hundreds of workers at government office buildings in the city scramble out in panic and fear of another aftershock.

So far there was no immediate report of casualties and material damages, caused by the earthquake which was also felt by the people in Padang, West Sumatra.

Earlier late Monday, West Sumatra province was also rattled by a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, causing panic among local residents living along the province's coast.

The epicenter of the quake which struck at 03.58 p.m. was located 33 km southwest of Bukittinggi town at a depth of 124 km, head of the Padang Panjang meteorology and geophysics station, Sumarso, said.

The quake was strongly felt by people living in Padang, Pesisir Selatan, Padang Pariaman, Bukittinggi, Agam and Padang Panjang.

The tremblor prompted people staying at two-storey buildings in Padang to rush outdoors.
