PRESIDENT LEADS NATIONAL HEROES` DAY CEREMONY
Jakarta, Nov 10 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono here Monday led a ceremony to mark National Heroes' Day at the Kalibata National Heroes' Cemetery in south Jakarta.
Accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, the president arrived at the Heroes' Monument in the middle of the cemetery at 8:00 in the morning, greeted by Social Affairs Minister Bahtiar Chamsyah.
Then , at 8:18 and facing the monument, the president led everybody present in observing a few moments of silence in remembrance of the meritorious services of all deceased heroes. Next, the president placed wreaths at the foot of the monument, followed by the offering of prayers for the heroes' souls by Religious Affairs Minister Maftuh Basyuni.
After the ceremony at the monument, the president, accompanied by Vice President Jusuf Kalla and other guests, made the rounds of the graves of a number of deceased leaders on which he sprinkled flowers. He visited the graves of among others, former vice president Adam Malik and his wife, Nelly Adam Malik, former president Umar Wirahadikusumah , former vice presdient Sudharmono, former foreign minister Roeslan Abdul Gani, former Provisional Consultative Assembly (MPRS) chairman AH Nasution, former TNI chief Edi Sudrajat, and former army chief Ahmad Yani, and Yani's assistants Suprapto, MT Haryono, S Parman, and Sutoyo Siswomiharjo.
The ceremonies at the National Heroes Cemetery were also participated in by hundreds of school students, civil servants, and a number of war veterans,
Also seen at the function were National Police Chief Gen Bambang Hendarso Danuri and Attorney General Hendarman Supandji.
The president and his entourage left the Kalibata Heroes' Cemetery for the presidential office at 8:55.
