Obama may bring opportunity for Iran-US ties
The foreign policy team of US President-elect Barack Obama will adopt "clever" policies with Iran, providing it with an opportunity to remove decade-long differences, according to an Iranian professor.
Ali Ansari said that Obama team has been working on Iran for several months and is "highly likely to normalize relations by opening interest section in Iran".
"I hope the recent US elections could have a positive impact on the Iranian politics. Obama's foreign policy concerning Iran greatly depends on Iran's decision to establish ties with the US," Ansari said in an exclusive interview with IRNA in London.
Asked about the impact of the recent letter by President Mahmoud hmadinejad to Obama, Ansari said the president-elect will give a 'diplomatic but clear' response.
President Ahmadinejad last Thursday sent a message to Obama, congratulating him on his victory in the US elections. Ahmadinejad urged his American counterpart to "make fundamental and clear changes in Washington's foreign and domestic policies as demanded by all nations and the American people".
President Ahmadinejad also told Obama that the opportunities provided by the God Almighty can be used for the elevation of nations.
Ansari who is the director of Institute for Iranian Studies in Britain further said if Europeans become united with America, then "Iran faces a touch game" in international relations.
He suggested that while "Iran has the key to Iraq, Europe also has the key to Iran".
"I propose that Obama appoint a non-political special envoy for Iran affairs," Ansari said, adding that chilly relations between Iran and the US could ameliorate if both sides behave pragmatically.
Ansari, who is a professor of history in St. Andrews University in Scotland, said 2008 elections brought hope for Americans as they were grappling with an army of problems inherited from outgoing US president George Bush.
"Even Europeans and people in the Middle East who had turned against America because of misguided policies of Bush are optimistic about Obama," he said.
Ansari hoped that Obama could change the tarnished image of the US before the global public opinion./end
