EXECUTION OF AMROZI ET AL ALREADY RIGHT: DEMOCRAT PARTY
Jakarta, Nov 9 (ANTARA) - The government has taken the right decision in executing Bali bombing death-row convicts Amrozi, Muklas alias Ali Ghurfron and Imam Samudra, Deputy Chairman of the Democrat Party faction in the House, Sutan Bathoegana, said.
"The world has been waiting for their executions for a long time. The executions have taken a long process due to the fact that security officers were willing to uncover terrorist network in the country and fight it in the bud," Bathoegana, who is also a member of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission VII which deals with energy affairs, said.
He made the remarks following the executions of Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra, who had been in the death row since 2003, by a firing squad in Nusa Kambang, Cilacap district, Central Java, at the wee hours on Sunday.
Amrozi, Mukhlas and Iman Samudra were on death row for their roles in the bombings in Bali in October 2002 that left more than 200 people dead including 88 Australian tourists.
Bathoegana said that the government's efforts to delay the execution in order to uncover the terrorist network proved to be effective. "The shooting to death of the central figure of the terrorist network, Dr Azhari, is the example of the effectiveness," he added.
Besides, security officers also succeeded in uncovering the terrorist network in Palembang, South Sumatra, as well in Pelumpang near the state-owned oil company Pertamina installations in North Jakarta, recently.
"The uncovering of the network in Pelumpang was a big achievement because the terrorists were already nearing the vital installation facility, namely the Pertamina installations.
He said that all of them were proof to the world that the Indonesian government was serious in cracking down on terrorists.
"Terrorism is a common enemy for all nations that should be cracked down," he said.
