DELAYED EXECUTION OF BALI BOMBERS CREATE NEW PROBLEMS: CRIMINOLOGIST

Jakarta, Nov 9 (ANTARA) - The repeated delay in the execution of the Bali bombers, Amrozi et al, had sparked controversies and created new problems, legal expert and criminologist Adrianus Meliala of the University of Indonesia said.

He said here on Sunday that the Attorney General's Office (AGO) should have learned the case of Fabianus Tibo et al, convicts in the Poso conflict, which happened to create new controversies and problem because their executions were delayed.

The UI criminologist made the remarks in comment on the execution of Amrozi, Muklas alias Ali Ghufrom and Imam Samudra at 0.15 early on Sunday.

"The government, in this case the AGO, should have taken a lesson from the controversies arising before the executions of Fabianus Tibo and friends which were repeatedly delayed last year," Meliala said.

He said that the delay in the execution of Tibo and friends even created a new problem.

Now, the AGO once again made a mistake when it was very inefficient and ineffective in handling Amrozi et al's case in the runup to their executions.

"The need to carry out the execution in a conducive security condition obligated security officers, police in particular, to employ a large number of personnel," he said.

He said that the deployment of police strength and operations in the runup to the execution was a big job that had to be done.

"Its implication is that it is the people that have to be safeguarded," he added.

Bali bombers, Amrozi, Mukhlas alias Ali Ghufron and Imam Samudra, who had been death-row convicts since 2003, were executed by a firing squad in Cilacap district, Central Java, at the wee hours on Sunday.

Amrozi, Mukhlas and Iman Samudra were on death row for their roles in the bombings in Bali in October 2002 that left more than 200 people dead including 88 Australian tourists.
