Ducab plans two new plants

Dubai, Nov 9, 2008 (WAM) - Dubai-based Ducab, a regional leader in cable manufacturing, will set up two plants with a total investment of Dh500 million.
One of the new plants will be in a neighbouring GCC country – the first outside the UAE for Ducab, Managing Director Andrew Shaw told Emirates Business at the recent Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (Adipec).
"By the year-end, we will make an announcement for production expansion in the GCC. It will be our first plant outside UAE and will start on a smaller scale in the first phase," he said.
Andrew Shaw said an announcement will be made early next year for another manufacturing plant in Dubai to add to the company's existing capacity in the country.
"The total investment for the two plants will be around Dh500m," he said.
The Ducab official said another expansion plan in the pipeline is to establish a special cable facility for the oil and gas industry.
"We are refurbishing a factory in Jebel Ali to multiply our production five times for cables for the oil and gas sector. That will be fully operational by the middle of next year. The work has started and the machineries have already arrived," he said.
Shaw said 2008 has been quite an important year for Ducab in Abu Dhabi. About five years ago, it took its first step into Abu Dhabi by setting up a plant in Musaffah. "This year, we had three major plans here for our operations. We will install new equipment at our Musaffah I plant that almost doubles its capacity.
"In June, we opened our copper rod plant (with a capacity of 110,000 tonnes per annum) and in April we made our first acquisition in Abu Dhabi – the assets of Electrocab's cable factory in Musaffah –giving us an additional 25,000 tonnes of cable capacity," Shaw said.
