TWELVE COUNTRIES TAKING PART IN IMSO EVENT IN MATARAM
Mataram, Indonesia, Nov 9 (ANTARA) - A total 12 countries are taking part in an International Mathematics and Science Olympiad (IMSO) for elementary school in West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) provincial capital of Mataram, which will last from November 9 to 11, 2008, organizing committee chairman H Ahyar Abduh said.
He said that among the participating countries were Sri Langka, Taiwan, china, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, the Philippines and host Indonesia.
The committee chairman said that about 200 participants from the 12 participating countries were attending the contest.
The IMSO event was opened by Basic and Secondary Eduction Director General Dr Bambang Indrianto representing the minister of education here on Sunday.
The opening, which was highlighted with local arts performances such as Lombok's 'beleq' drum, was attended by NTB Governor Zainul Majdi, Mataram Mayor Moh Ruslan and other local government officials and invitees.
Governor Zaiunul Majdi said the event would encourage school children in the province to further deepen their knowledge in math and sciences for the interest of their future.
The Mataram city which was trusted to host the contest would use the IMSO event as an opportunity to promote its tourism as well.
"In order to smooth the activities the Mataram city administration is providing a fund amounting to Rp250 million," Mataram Mayor Ruslan said.
