Angry mob attacks Chinese police over motorcyclist' death

Beijing, Nov 8 (PTI) Furious over the death of a
motorcyclist, about 400 protesters set off an overnight attack
on a police station in Bao'an District of southern China.

The attack following the death of Li Guochao, who died
when a traffic officer allegedly threw a radio set at him
after he jumped a check post for unlicensed vehicles. Li lost
control of his bike and hit a nearby lamp post. Police rushed
Li to the hospital who later succumbed to injuries, media
reports said.

Police officials have said that there were no police
officers at the checkpoint at the time of the incident. The
nearest officer was a traffic policeman on duty 300 meters
away, state run Xinhua news agency said.

Angry over the incident, Li's family brought the body to
police station, gradually more than 400 local residents joined
them. They seized the police station, pelted stones and set
fire to a police car, in an attack that lasted till early
Saturday morning , the agency reported.

There are no reports of deaths or injuries in the
protest.

The body of the victim has been sent to the city
mortuary, after his family agreed on investigation and
compensation.

Li's relatives have demanded a compensation of USD 87,890
but the district government officials agreed to an advance of
200,000 yuan. They said that the final compensation would be
given after autopsy results, the agency added.

The traffic officer who threw the radio, identified
only by the surname Lai, has been detained by police.
