Lanka appreciates Pakistan for support in fighting terror

Colombo, Nov 8 (PTI) Sri Lanka has appreciated Pakistan for its unstinted support in fighting terrorism as the war against Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (L.T.T.E.) reaches a decisive stage.

"Sri Lanka is grateful to Pakistan for supporting its fight against terrorism," Sri Lankan Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara said in a meeting with Pakistani delegation.

Lokubandara said the Sri Lankan government had exhausted
its options other than to intensify the war against L.T.T.E.
as the outfit was not prepared to lay down arms and hold
dialogue.

"We had tried every method including talking to the
L.T.T.E.," Lokubandara told the delegation led by the Deputy
Speaker of Pakistan National Assembly, Faisal Karim Kundi at
Geneva recently, the State owned Daily News reported Saturday.

Apprising the delegation on the government's efforts to
counter terrorism, he said Sri Lanka had suffered from
terrorism for almost three decades.

"An all parties conference was also held to build a
consensus on finding a solution to the problem," he said.

Kundi was accompanied by Members of National assembly
Nuzhat Sadiq and Yasmeen Rehman besides Senators Muhammad
Ghufran Khan and Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani.

The Pakistan Deputy Speaker also recalled the "excellent
relations Pakistan and Sri Lanka enjoy", the newspaper
reported.

He told Speaker Lokubandara that the Pakistan People's
Party had paid a huge price for the restoration of democracy
in the country as it lost its leader Benazir Bhutto to
terrorism.

He said that new democratic government was capable to
meet the challenges.

Kundi said Sri Lanka is also facing the terrorism problem
and that Islamabad was making all efforts to address terrorism
and extremism. "What we are facing is an international
factor," the Pakistan leader said.

In his observation, Senator Muhammad Ghufran Khan said
there should be more economic collaboration between the two
countries and that Pakistan could offer heavy body trucks and
buses to Sri Lanka.

Pakistan has agreed to export 25,000 metric tons of
Cement from to meet its immediate requirements. Chairman of
the Sri Lanka Cement Corporation, Lalinda Liyanage said.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lankan Defence Spokesman Keheliya
Rambukwella said besides Sri Lanka, terrorism had become the
main problem for South Asian Association for Regional
Cooperation (S.A.A.R.C.) Nations, particularly India, Pakistan
and Afghanistan.

Terrorism is not an issue confined only to a single or
several countries in the world but a global menace that is
spreading all around the world day by day, he said here last
week.

Sri Lanka has been increasing looking at China and
Pakistan for weapons supplies for its war against the L.T.T.E.

This is in the wake of New Delhi’s reluctance to provide
arms to the Island Nation. PTI
