MINISTER ASKS PEOPLE NOT TO ABSTAIN IN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
Jambi, Indonesia, Nov 8 (ANTARA) - Home Affairs Minister Mardiyanto has called on the people not to become abstainers in the 2009 presidential election.
"People should use their right as citizens to vote in the presidential election without any pressure from any party. Please, vote with a pure heart," Mardiyanto said here Saturday in a speech to inaugurate Sungai Penuh as a municipality in Kerinci district, about 410 km from Jambi city.
In the face of the presidential election in 2009, people should put national unity first, he said, adding people should never become disunited merely because they differed in opinion or choice.
According to Mardiyanto, people who use their voting right with a pure heart were people who cared about the life and future of their country. By giving their votes, they would support whoever was elected in doing his or her best to work for the country's prosperity.
The minister also asked the people to respect whoever was elected as the nation's next leader.
"A peaceful election is what we are always hoping for. It is a condition where any candidate is ready to win or lose and any supporters is ready to respect the result of the election. This must be done so that the future government can carry out its developmental tasks," he said.
