Sheikha Hissa Reviews Action Plan Before Arab League Council

Doha, June 19 (QNA) - Special Envoy of the Arab League Secretary General HE Sheikha Hissa Khalifa bin Ahmed al-Thani affirmed today the importance of redoubling efforts in the field of humanitarian relief in the region and facing the current challenges to improve the humanitarian situation. This came during remarks she gave before the extraordinary meeting of the Arab League Council, which opened today at the permanent delegates level under the chairmanship of Egypt to discuss the mechanisms of the development of the Arab League. HE Sheikha Hissa Al-Thani has presented her vision on the development of humanitarian activities areas, stressing that it stems from the overall vision of the Arab League, especially with regard to improving the humanitarian situation in the region and having access to the needy and to meet such needs by the appropriate sources. HE the Special Envoy of Arab League Secretary-General explained that this vision is dealing with tasks included in the decision of the assignment of the special envoy by the Arab League Secretary-General, and the new changes in Arab countries which are going through crises, natural disasters, conflicts, wars and troubles, as well as the contents of the humanitarian conventions and treaties, which are based on the principles of human rights to which the Arab League is committed. She pointed to the increasing numbers of the affected and displaced persons, as well as refugees due to the natural disasters, conflicts, wars and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in the wake the Arab revolutions. Sheikha Hissa noted that the action plan which she proposes, aims to realize a number of goals foremost of which being support the effective and systematic humanitarian work, raising of awareness through the drawing up of operational and practical policies and working out a quantitative and qualitative database on humanitarian activities in the region. For his part, Arab League Secretary General Dr. Nabil Elaraby called on HE Sheikha Hissa Al-Thani to start the implementation of the humanitarian action plan in the Arab region. In a speech before the meeting, Dr. Elaraby said this plan is a part of the Arab League development process in order to play its role in the field of relief, specially that the developments in the Arab world require considering the means of providing assistance and the humanitarian relief in the affected areas in general, away from the current conflicts in the region.(QNA)
