News Focus: INDONESIAN NEWSPAPERS HAIL OBAMA, VOICE HOPE FOR BETTER TIES

By Bustanuddin

Jakarta, Nov 6 (ANTARA)- Most newspapers in Jakarta on Thursday (Nov 6) hailed US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's victory in the November 4 presidential election as the country's first black leader, hoping that Obama's presidency portends better US-Indonesia relations.
"Jakarta Post" in its editorial titled "Victory for America" among other things wrote, Americans have spoken and they have made an excellent choice. The election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States on Tuesday is a victory for America, for multiracialism, for civil rights, for liberal democracy, and for common sense.
Congratulation must first be extended to Americans for taking this important step in breaking down racial barriers and sending an African-American, and one with a strong Asian connection for good measure, to the White House for the first time in history.
According to this daily, the potential for goodwill comes not only from the fact that he went to school in Jakarta as a six-year old, where classmates remember him as the tallest boy in the class, the one they called Barry.
More importantly, the goodwill was planted by his mother Stanley Ann Dunham, an American social worker who spent considerable years helping the poor in Indonesia.
The Post in its headline wrote, Jakarta shared the anxiety and the joy of the US presidential election won by new Indonesian darling Barack Hussein Obama on Wednesday. It was a special day for students of Obama's former primary school "SDN Menteng 01", Central Jakarta, who gathered at the school hall to watch the final results pour in.
While "Kompas", one of Indonesia's leading newspapers, said in its headline, Barack Hussein Obama (47) gained a landslide victory over John McCain in the United States presidential election which broke the record of the most voters in the past 100 years.
On its second page, this daily also reported that President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono conveyed congratulatory message to US president-elect Barack Obama.
This paper also carried a comment by economic observer Aviliani, saying that Obama's victory would not have a direct impact on the Indonesian economy and that his economic program as put forward during his campaign should be responded to immediately.
"Media Indonesia", under the headline "WORLD'S STOCK POSITIVELY WELCOMES OBAMA'S VICTORY", said the majority of the world's stock markets got stronger yesterday following Barack Obama's victory in the US presidential election. Obama's victory was expected to bring a significant change for the US as the heart of the world's economy.
In the meantime, "Republika" daily wrote "OBAMA: CHANGE HAS COME". US President-elect Barack Obama promised Tuesday that "Change has come to America" as he gave a victory speech after becoming the first African-American to be elected to the White House. "It's been a long time coming. But tonight, because of what we did on this day, in this election, at this defining moment, change has come to America," he said in front of a crowd of 65,000 people.
"Bisnis Indonesia" daily said, Obama's victory would bring about new expectation for economic recovery of the superpower country.
In addition, "Tempo" tabloid which carried the word "Bravo" for Obama's victory in its front page also wrote that Obama's success would affect the world's stock exchanges.***3***
