Qatar Celebrates World No Tobacco Day
Doha, May 30 (QNA) - Qatar will mark the World No Tobacco Day which falls on May 31 and observed this year under the theme "Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship"
Supreme Council of Health (SCH) will organize a number of events on this occasion to raise public awareness about the hazards of tobacco and smoking, in cooperation with a number of ministries and civil society organizations.
The State of Qatar is making great efforts in the fight against tobacco and smoking., It has issued a law for controlling tobacco and its derivatives, which prohibits advertising for cigarettes or tobacco or its derivatives.
The Law, as well, banns smoking in all public indoor areas, and prohibits the sale of cigarettes or tobacco types and derivatives for those who are below 18 years of age.
SCH has conducted a survey of tobacco among adults in Qatar in cooperation with the Qatar Statistics and the Regional Office of the World Health Organization to provide the data needed to support tobacco control programs, by assessing the status of consumption of tobacco and its products. It has also launched a media campaign and organized a number of workshops and seminars to raise public awareness about the hazards of smoking. (QNA)
