Banten, Nov 6 (ANTARA) - Vice President Jusuf Kalla has called on Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) volunteers and the people at large to remain watchful and alert to possible disasters in days ahead.
"Many thanks to PMI volunteers for your selfless services to the nation, and I hope you and all people of Indonesia will continue to be watchful and alert to the possibility of natural disasters that may happen any time," Kalla said at the closing ceremony of the 4th PMI Volunteers Working Meeting at Matahari Caritaria beach in Pandegelang, Banten, on Thursday.
On the occasion the vice president asked the PMI voluntary workers to keep studying and training to improve their skills in disaster management efforts.
"You have to study and train yourselves before disaster strikes," the vice president said, adding that volunteers should remain alert to possible disasters.
Kalla said the working meeting of PMI voluntary workers was good for the participants to exchange views and experiences for the improvement of their skills to manage disasters.
The meeting was participated in by 1,500 PMI volunteers and 38 foreign volunteers from several countries such as China, Bangladesh, Malaysia, the Netherlands, and Germany.
The participants of the meeting had taken part in various activities such as a blood donation drive, civic mission, people-based integrated risk reduction (Pertama), and free medical treatment for 2,700 people in the villages of Pasauran, Umbul Tanjung, Sukanegara, Kawoyang, and Sukarame, and medical service for 422 patients in a field hospital at the campsite.
