84 PERSENT OF INDONESIA'S PRIMATES IN DANGER

Jakarta, Nov 5 (ANTARA) - Some 84 percent of primates in Indonesia is on the brink of extinction, even though Indonesia has about 15 percent of the earth's biological diversity, a minister said.

"The threat of extinction of fauna and flora in Indonesia is very serious because it can harm nature's balance which can also threaten food security," State Minister for the Environment Rachmat Witoelar said on Wednesday.

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), Indonesia has 3,682 animal species, including 701 species on the brink of extinctioon.

Moreover, Witoelar said, climate change had worsened the situation.

"Therefore, we need to intensify efforts to preserve nature as well as animals along with efforts to adapt and mitigating climate change," he added.

In the spirit of preserving nature and animals, the Environment Office evaluated the performance of regencies in implementing the rules of natural resources conservation and controlling environmental damage.

"Of the 164 regencies meeting the requirements, 54 were evaluated further. The result of the evaluation shows that Fak-fak regency in West Papua, Malinau regency in East Kalimantan, Western Seram regency in Maluku and Lebong regency in Bengkulu are awarded the Raksaniyata trophy," Witoelar said.

The trophy was given to the regencies by Vice President Jusuf Kalla.
