THREE STAKES PLANTED IN NIRBAYA AREA FOR BALI BOMBERS' EXECUTION
Cilacap, Nov 5 (ANTARA) - Three wooden stakes have been stuck into the ground at a location in the Nirbaya area on Nusakambangan island for the execution of Bali-I bombing convicts Amrozi, Ali Gurfron, and Imam Samudra, a reliable source said.
"Three stakes for the Bali-I bombing death row convicts now stand at a spot in the Nirbaya area in Nusakambangan. They were planted there on Tuesday," the source told ANTARA here on Wednesday.
According to the source, the stakes were about two meters high and stood five meters from each other.
Nirbaya is a mountaineous area about 6 kilometers south of Batu correctional institute (LP Batu) where Amrozi, Imam Samudra, and Ali Gufrom are being held.
The spot was part of the ruins of a prison built by the Dutch colonial administration but closed down in 1986. A few executions were carried out at the spot in the past, namely of Umar, a man sentenced to death for subversive activity, in 1985, of Bambang Suswoyo in 1987, and of Nigerian drug offenders Samuel Iwuchukwu Okoye and Hansen Anthony Nwaolisa on June 26, 2008.
Meanwhile, dozens of troops from the Mobile Brigade (Brimob) have been deployed around the Karangkandri thermal power plant in Cilacap, Central Java, in connection with the imminent execution of Amrozi et al.
"Cilacap police and the power plant's internal security unit are backed up by Mobile Brigade troops ahead of the execution of the three Bali I bombers," Police Adjunct Inspector Pratikno said here on Tuesday.
He said security at vital objects in Cilacap had been tightened since the first-level alert status was declared in the area in the runup to the execution which was expected to be carried out early this month.
"Security around the power plant has been stepped up since five days ago," Pratikno said, adding that all motor vehicles on the road in the area were checked.
Pratikno said besides Karangkadri power plant, security around the Wijayapura pier in Cilacap had also been tightened. All visitors coming to Nusakambangan island through the pier had to pass a metal detector examination.
He said a platoon of police officers from the Mobile Brigade had also been deployed to safeguard Cilacap's Tunggulwulung airstrip ahead of the execution.
