INDONESIA'S DEMOCRAT PARTY HOPES TO EMULATE OBAMA'S VICTORY
Jakarta, Nov 5 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Democrat Party hopes it will win the majority of the votes in the 2009 legislative elections following the victory of Barack Obama of the Democratic Party in the United States presidential election, party executive Anas Urbaningrum said.
"We hope the Indonesian Democrat Party will emulate the United States Democratic Party's election victory, come the 2009 legislative elections," Urbaningrum said here on Wednesday.
Therefore, Urbaningrum said, his party congratulated Barack Obama for his victory in the US presidential election. "We also congratulate the US Democratic Party. Our congratulations also go to the American people," he added.
He expressed hope that Barack Obama's electoral victory would also result in a solution to the US financial crisis and the creation of a world order that was more secure, peaceful and marked by mutual respect among nations.
"I am confident that Obama's victory is welcomed by members of the international community," the Democrat Party executive said.
Urbaningrum also hoped that Obama would not repeat the mistakes and political blunders of his predecessor, George W Bush.
"More respectable international politics cannot be built on the basis of the arrogance of one state or nation over others," he said.
Therefore, Obama was expected to bring a fresh wind into US foreign policy so there would be more justice, civility and democracy in world affairs, he said.
"God willing, Obama's victory will be followed by a victory of the Democrat Party in the 2009 general elections in Indonesia," he added.
In the meantime, Deputy Chairman of the House of Representatives (DPR)'s Commission I, which deals with foreign and defense affairs, Yusron Ihza Mahendra, expressed hope that Obama's victory would mark a new era in the relations between Indonesia and the United States, particularly in the defense and economic fields.
"Expectations of this kind are high in the House, in Commission I in particular. Most Indonesian people have been hoping for Obama's victory and this is happy news for them," he said through a cellular phone call from Switzerland.
Yusron who was in Switzerland to attend an Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) meeting said he hoped economic and defense cooperation with the United States would increase further.
