Doha to Host Conference on Developing Arab League Human Rights System in June
Cairo, May 09 (QNA) - Chairman of the National Human Rights Committee, and the Arabic Network for Human Rights Institutions (ANHRI), Dr. Ali bin Smaikh Al Marri , on Thursday called for developing mechanisms of action within the Arab League since human rights and development partners' including governmental and non-governmental organizations are urging stronger coordination and cooperation aimed at resolving issues relating to human dignity and the right to life.
This came in a speech delivered by HE Al Marri before the plenary of the international seminar on the development of democracy in the Arab world, which started in Cairo, Egypt under the theme of "Development and Democracy and Developing the System of Arab Region" and being organized by the Arabic Network for Human Rights Institutions (ANHRI) led by Qatar's NHRC in collaboration with Arab League, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Arab Organization for Human Rights.
Dr. Al Marri drew attention to the interference between the factors of poverty, hunger, climate changes and fiscal policies disorder with issues of human rights, democracy, good governance and the empowerment of women in all spheres of life.
The relation between development and democracy is very complementary and reciprocal, he said, explaining that democracy provides the mechanisms to achieve a real sustainable development, while development creates material basis of democracy improvement.
In this context, Dr. Al Marri underlined the importance of establishing a strong partnership between the Arab League and the civil society organizations, which begin by building confidence and finding out mechanisms governing this relationship.
Achieving partnership and coordination between all these parties will ensure the achievement of the objectives and principles of development, Dr. Al Marri said, noting that this requires a favorable environment for constructive and sustained dialogue meant to bringing together people representatives of the Arab governments and leaders of Arab humanitarian, development and human rights organizations along with regional and international organizations.
The two-day event discusses several issues including, the implementation of good governance in the Arab region, task of transferring into democracy and its connection with good governance, methods of development, and how to achieve social justice will be discussed in the seminar.
Nationalism and development are basic factors for social justice, empowerment of women in Arab region and upgrading them in the Arab League are also on the agenda. (QNA)
