PRESIDENT: RI SHOULD STRIVE TO BECOME ECONOMICALLY SELF-RELIANT
Bogor, Nov 4 (ANTARA) - Indonesia should gradually become economically self-reliant in order not to be easily affected by global crises, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said in his scientific oration to mark the 45th anniversary of the Bogor Institute of Agriculture (ITB) here on Tuesday.
Speaking before IPB students and a number of cabinet ministers at the IPB's Graha Widya Wisuda building, the President said national economic self-reliance can be reached by strengthening the local economy and reducing reliance on foreign loans to finance development.
"Our sources of investment and domestic funds should be strong so that we don't need to rely on foreign loans ," the president said, adding that the nation also should develop its comparative advantages.
Meanwhile, he said, the proportion of foreign funds in Indonesia's development budget had continued to drop. At one time, foreign funding accounted for 70 percent of the development bdget but the figure had now declined to 20 percent.
The President said three things had to be analyzed from the current global economic system.
Yudhoyono said the first thing was single global currency, the existence of World Trade Organization (WTO) and International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the third was the need of global economic balance.
To encourage the national economic progress, the president said there should be an economic reform through resources, culture and knowledge.
He said that to have sustainable economic growth, attention should be given to the survival and the future of next generation through economic equality.
"I do not believe the so-called trickle down effect theory," Yudhoyono said, adding that the domestic economy should be strengthened by encouraging economic autonomy at regional level.
"We should also have defense industry, energy, and food autonomy. I say defense industry because we have embargo several years ago," Yudhoyono said in his oration.
The topic of President Yudhoyono's oration was "To Develop National Convergence Toward Energy and Food Resilience to Strengthen National Sovereignty."
Meanwhile, IPB Rector Herry Suhardiyanto said in his address, the IPB had made many significant contributions in various fields to the nation.
"IPB played an important role in the 'green revolution' program. In 1973, IPB made history through the invention of a poverty measurement indicator by Prof Sajogo," Herry Suhardiyanto said.
In addition, he said, IPB had also initiated a special research project on women and established a Women's Study Center.
