Several LTTE rebels killed as troops move into key area: army

Colombo, Nov 3 (PTI) Sri Lankan security forces have moved further into the strategic Akkarayankulam area in the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam (L.T.T.E.) stronghold of Kilinochchi as troops killed several L.T.T.E. cadres in operations in western part of the district, officials said Monday.
"The clash in Kilinochchi left many L.T.T.E. cadres dead
and many others injured," the defence ministry said, adding
ground troops had confirmed the casualities.
Meanwhile, 57 Division troops continuing counter
terrorist operations North of Akkarayankulama area in
Kilinochchi, launched several offensives at L.T.T.E. positions
reportedly inflicting serious damages to the L.T.T.E., the
defence ministry said.
Fighting at the battlefront has now shifted further into
the Akkarayankulama built-up, approximately 3 km North of the
Akkarayankulama Tank bund, it said.
Army snipers have also taken enemy targets in general
area Theramurikandy, east of Akkarayankulama, the military
said.
Army 59 division troops operating in the Mullaittivu
battlefront further pushed their forward boundaries towards
the Kumalamunai-Thannimurippukulam road during yesterday's
operations, the defence ministry said.
Troops attacked two L.T.T.E. bunkers located in the
Andankulam area in Mullaittivu and captured them Sunday
morning, it said.
Elsewhere, troops captured 81 mm mortar pit and 4 bunkers
late on Sunday, it said adding troops confirmed heavy damages
to the L.T.T.E. in both confrontations.
Separately, troops engaged heavy artillery fire at
L.T.T.E. strongholds detected in the north of Andankulam area
in Mullaittivu during daytime Sunday, with ground observers on
the front confirming heavy damages to the tiger rebels.
It said troops engaged in mine sweeping operations took
possession of 129 AP (Anti Personnel) mines during the day's
operations.
"Troops of the Task Force-1, plunged into an L.T.T.E.
harbouring position located Northwest of Madam on Sunday
forcing the rebels to flee further towards Pooneryn," the
Defence ministry said.
"The military assault comes within hours after the tiger
militants were heavily beaten off from general area
Paddaruyalvillu, in the western Kilinochchi battlefront on
Saturday," the military said.
Troops have recovered 2 L.T.T.E. bodies, a T-56 assault
rifle, a compass and an I-com set during subsequent search
operations conducted in the area, it said, adding arrangements
are being made to hand over the dead bodies to the I.C.R.C.
Also, Army snipers deployed in general area Arasakulama
in Kilinochchi have taken several successful targets Monday,
sources said.
Troops are on pursuit of the rebels who fled further
northwest from the A-32 main road in total disarray military
said, adding that security forces are now engaged in
clearing and surrounding areas of Madam.
In Jaffna, army troops inflicted damages to the L.T.T.E.
fighters in two different confrontations in Muhamalai area
