INDONESIAN ELECTION COMMISSION MEMBERS TO US TO LEARN US ELECTIONS
Jakart, Nov 3 (ANTARA) - Three members of the Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) have left for the US to learn the implementation of elections in that country.
KPU chairman Abdul Hafiz Anshary said here on Monday that the departure of three KPU members to the US was for learning the implementation of elections in that country.
"We consider the invitation to the US was important because KPU has to learn to be better," he said.
KPU members Abdul Aziz, Andi Nurpati and Sri Nuryanto had gone to the US to meet the invitation of the International Foundation of Election System to observe the preparations and implemention of the elections in that country.
Indonesia plans to hold legislative elections in April next year which will later be followed by presidential elections.
Hafiz said it was possible to reject the invitation but because the benefit it would give was big it was then decided to meet the invitation which was sent five months ago.
The three KPU members left for the US last Friday and "they won't be long there, only a week," Hafiz said.
He was aware that their departure would draw reactions from several quarters and also criticisms.
The chairman of the General Elections Monitoring Agency, Nur Hidayat Sardini, meanwhile said when asked to comment on the matter that it was no problem so long as their task in the KPU was done well.
"It is alright so long as the KPU could carry out its job
well including the technical ones," he said.
Another KPU member, Endang Sulastri, meanwhile had gone to the Hague for the same purpose.
Jojo Rohi from the Independent Monitoring Committee regretted their departure abroad saying the KPU was not sensitive towards the general elections problems it was facing.
Meanwhile, its performance has so far been considered not good following the discovery of problematic candidates in its list of candidates and because registration of voters had not yet been finished, he said.
