PRINCE CHARLES SPEAKS ON ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES AT PRESIDENTIAL PALACE

Jakarta, Nov 3 (ANTARA) - Britain's Prince of Wales spoke about environmental preservation efforts in a presidential lecture at the presidential palace here Monday.

"There is no doubt climate change is the biggest manifestation of the crisis. That's why this is the right time for the world to unite and find solutions," he said.

The prince said with the uncertain climate conditions, including a prediction that ice at the earth's poles will melt in the summer within the next five years, Indonesia as an archipelagic country was potentially threatened.

"The rising sea level will have an impact on people who live on Java island's coasts and other places, including fishery and agricultural production centers," he said.

Therefore, he asked all sides, including the Indonesian government, to deal with climate change.

On the same ocassion, the prince also expressed his appreciation to President Yudhoyono for hosting an international climate change conference in Bali last year.

"You have convinced the world that the conference was a proper preparation for Copenhagen 2009 and a post-Kyoto Protocol agreement while giving precise priority to tropical forests through negotiations," he said.

The prince said protecting and conserving forests in Indonesia were not an easy task. Therefore, he called on developed countries to give incentives to countries with tropical forests.

"The incentives should not be given as aid but through commercial transactions. Countries with tropical forests need to consider the amount of compensation to carry out economic development without cutting down trees," he said.

Developing countries needed to consider the amounts of money they could pay and how they would earn the funds.

At the end of his speech, the prince said the final purpose of tropical forest conservation and reducing the greenhouse effect was to create a fine environment for the people in the future.

The presidential lecture started at 11 am local time and was attended by President Yudhoyono and Vice President Jusuf Kalla.

Meanwhile, in his welcoming remarks, President Yudhoyono explained Indonesia's role in handling global climate change and said Indonesia wanted to share experiences and views with Prince Charles who was known as a figure with the same concerns.
